Ugly facts about food: 27% of all edible food in the US goes to waste

A recent government study reveals that over one quarter of all food in the United States goes to waste every year. To be excact, 27% of all edible food goes to waste, which adds up to the astonishin total amount is 96.4 (of 356) billion pounds of food. This means that about one pound of food is thrown to the trash every day by each US citizen.

Another astonishing fact is, that currently there is about one billion people on our planet, which suffer from obesity. At the same time there is about one billion people, who suffer from constant malnutrition.

I don’t mean to preach or anything. Just makes you think, doesn’t it?

Cat litter cake tastes delicious – looks like cat shit

Cat litter cake tastes delicious - looks like cat shit

Me and my spouse have a birthday related tradition – each birthday the hero of the day gets to wish for look a for the birthday cake he/she will receive. So far the realized wishes have included for example Spiderman, an elk, Hobbes, etc. One thing that never crossed my mind though was to wish for a cake which would look like cat litter. However it seems, that the imagination of some people do not seem to have limits. Here is a cake baked by Andrea James, which indeed does look like cat litter.

The detailed instructions on how to bake your own cat litter cake can be found from here (particularly noteworthy is the instruction to use fresh, NON USED litterbox)

Balut – a boiled duck embryo from Cambodia

Do you fancy eggs? me to – just prefer to eat them before the embryo inside has a peck an feathers. The people in Cambodia apparently think differently, as a duck-egg-delicacy called balut is a great treat loved by the locals. The trick of preparing balut is to let the the embryo inside the egg to develop until the bird inside is nearly ready to see the daylight. When the embryo inside is right, the egg is boiled and served with a pich of salt on top.

The Cambodian locals enjoy their Balut normally as a night time snack, accompanied with a cold beer.

A private candy company lollyphile has come up with an idea to manyfacture lollipops out of absinthe. “made with real (and completely legal!) absinthe”

Awailable to order today for the price of $10 for a box of four.

Rare frogs + blender = gutted frog cocktail

Here’s yet another odd consumable, I really think the world could live without (you can blame me for being narrow minded). These frog cocktail are made by skinning live Telmatobius frogs and droppin them into a blender with other ingredients. This health-drink, which is said to have aphrodisiac properties, is §mighty popular at the Andes.

The frogs used for the cocktail are endangered species as well, and therefore the local officials are trying to stop the tradition, with little success so far.
